Some tips
… about correct handling of puppies

Settling in requires instinctive feeling. In particular young dogs must learn how to live with their new family, and also how to deal with their species. I strongly recommend puppy training. Starting from the age of 4 months the little ones participate with enthusiasm.

From the very beginning you can accustom the baby dogs slowly to car riding - just start with a few minutes in the parked auto and take the dog for some short rides. Don't feed your dogs before the trip, an they will be a positive experience. Please refrain from abrupt slamming on the brakes or accelerating. Your little passenger will be most grateful.

Actually you need not place animal babies under a glass dome, but nevertheless a puppy needs considerate handling. Even a little dog is no toy and he needs time to rest. Remember, a dog remains a friend for a lifetime.

The possession of a dog must be reported to the municipality until he is 6 months old. In Austria you have to pay a dog tax, and you receive an ID tag, which has to be carried by the dog around his neck.

Konrad Lorenz once noted that an animal learns when playing, because he has to deal both with articles and social objects. It referred to it, that the play develops the intelligence of a dog, because it brings it to new situations. It must develop new, innovative behavior, thus it increases its wealth of experience, and mental growth is accelerated and developed.

Stroking helps increasing the dog's intelligence. You talk to your dog with a calm voice, merrily call its name, take its head between your hands and stroke ears, neck and foreface. Smile at him and then stroke over his back, his sides and belly. The dog enjoys that and hears its name again and again. That increases the linkage to his owner and thus social intelligence.

The dog needs praise! Praise can also be food. Particularly with a young dog one has to look after perfect feeding, especially in the first year, when the dog's brain matures. The correct nutrition can influence the intelligence of his life as an adult.

All terriers are full of temper and courageous guards. They need a strong, but friendly hand, an owner with a good mind, who knows exactly, what he wants. Whoever means to get along in life without principles should not share his life with a terrier. Otherwise the dog sets his own.
